‘Fail’은 ‘실패하다’, ‘못하다’의 의미를 가지고 있습니다.
논문에서 ‘데이터 분석의 결과는 통계적인 유의성을 보여주지 못한다’, ‘분석 결과가 연구가설을 뒷받침하지 못한다’ 와 같이 ‘failure’ 의 의미를 표현할 때 아래의 예문에서와 같이 유용하게 사용할 수 있는 단어입니다.
“The present study failed to substantiate the traditional TAM effects of perceived ease of use on both behavioral intention and perceived usefulness.”
“A type II error means that the hypothesis test has failed to detect a real treatment effect.”
“The analysis failed to reveal a significant effect of gender.”
아래의 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.
“The results failed to support the hypothesis”
해석을 하면, “연구결과는 연구가설을 뒷받침 하지 못했다”라고 해석이 됩니다. 그런데, “연구결과는 연구가설을 뒷받침 했다”라는 표현을 하기 위해서 ‘fail’의 반대어인 ‘pass’나 ‘succeed’를 사용할 필요는 전혀 없습니다.
