A huge body of cognitive psychology literature is missing from the introduction. There is no mention of cognitive load or attentional load (although these concepts are briefly mentioned in the discussion), and the introduction does not cite any of the multimedia learning articles that investigate how modality or channel (visual, auditory) affects cognitive load (e.g., Mayer & Moreno, 2003). The hypotheses presented in the manuscript do not address cognitive load or modality issues, and the discussion of spatial ability is limited to how it might affect the comprehension of the diagrams. There is no discussion of how spatial ability could mediate how students divide their attention between the text and the diagrams, or how spatial ability might affect the understanding of the text. For instance, Hegarty, Kriz, & Cate (2003) point out that high spatial students might do better simply because they can take verbal information and translate it into an accurate internal visual representation.
Simply put, there are several factors involved in multimedia learning (i.e., modality and information integration, attentional/cognitive load, spatial ability) and the authors do not address all of these issues in their literature review, their hypotheses, or in the experimental design.
