연구자의 논문투고 과정에서 가장 핵심 단계는 역시 peer review입니다.
Peer review라는 말을 그대로 직역하면 ‘동료 평가’로 해석이 될 수 있습니다. 그러나 ‘동료’라는 표현 보다는, 같은 직종 혹은 연구분야에서 상대방의 연구 가치를 평가할 수 있는 ‘전문가 집단’으로 해석하는 것이 옳게 보입니다.
혹자는 “peer review 시스템은 과학 커뮤니케이션의 핵심”이라고 말하기도 합니다.
투고된 논문이 ‘리뷰를 할만한 가치가 있다’라고 에디터에 의해서 판단이 된다면, 에디터는 리뷰어에게 리뷰 요청을 보내게 됩니다.

한편의 논문을 심사하는 과정에서는 보통 2-4명의 리뷰어가 참여를 하게 됩니다.
에디터가 리뷰어에게 리뷰요청을 보내고 수락을 받기까지의 상태는 ‘waiting for reviewer assignment’라는 문구로 시스템 상에서 표시가 됩니다. 그리고 모든 리뷰어로부터 리뷰 수락을 받은 후에 리뷰 과정이 진행 된다면, ‘under review’라는 문구로 표시가 됩니다.
리뷰어는 저자가 투고한 논문을 평가하고 이에 대한 자신의 의견을 서술합니다. 경우에 따라서는 정성적 평가와 정량적 평가를 함께 수행함으로써 리뷰한 manuscript가 accept이 되어야 하는지, 또는 reject이 되어야 하는지에 대한 의견을 세부적으로 기술하기도 합니다.
