우리들의 논문을 심사하는 reviewer들은, 아무런 금전적인 보상(financial reward)을 받지 않고 그들의 소중한 시간을 투자하는 고마운 사람들 입니다.
‘우리’가 reviewer가 될 수도 있습니다.
경우에 따라서는 매우 거칠거나(harsh) 냉소적인(cynical) 커멘트를 논문의 저자에게 보내기도 합니다.
그러나 대부분의 reviewer들은 논문의 질과 가치를 보다 높여주기를 희망합니다.
투고된 manuscript이 최종적으로 출판이 되기 위해서 아낌없는 의견을 주는 reviewer들에게는 반드시 감사의 표시(gratitude expression)를 해야 합니다.
우리가 받게 되는 reviewer’s comment 에 포함된 문장 하나하나 마다 반드시 예의를 갖추고(polite) 사려깊게(thoughtful) reaction to reviewer’s comment를 작성해야 합니다.
예를 들어서, 논문의 한 부분에 대해서 ‘잘 작성되었다’라는 칭찬을 reviewer로부터 받았다면, 논문의 저자는 그 reviewer에게 감사의 표시를 해야 합니다. 아래의 예문과 같습니다.

불필요하거나 다소 엉뚱한 지적을 한 reviewer에게도 반드시 감사하다고 표현해야 합니다. 아래의 예문과 같습니다.
(Interacting with Computers 저널의 reviewer’s comment에 대한 저의 reaction입니다. ‘자발적인 피실험자’를 뜻하는 단어로서 ‘volunteer’를 논문의 본문에 사용하였는데, reviewer는 엉뚱하게도 ‘volunteer’를 사용하지 말고 대신에 ‘participant’를 사용하라는 커멘트입니다).
