우리나라 대학원생들의 학위논문을 읽다 보면, 논문의 초록에는 아래와 같은 표현을 심심치 않게 볼 수 있습니다.
“In this work, we developed the model of human behavior in a task, domain, or system”
또는,
“In this study, we examined the problem of finding necessary and sufficient conditions for the singular differential equation”
위의 두 개 예문의 공통점은 ‘we’를 사용했다는 점입니다.
틀린 표현입니다, 그리고 사용해서는 안되는 표현입니다.
왜냐하면, 학위논문의 저자는 1명이기 때문에 1인칭 복수 주격 대명사인 ‘we’를 사용해야 할 아무런 이유가 없습니다.
논문의 저자가 1명인 경우에 인칭대명사를 굳이 사용하고 싶다면, 1인칭 단수 주격 대명사인 ‘I’를 사용하면 됩니다.
그런데 scientific paper에서는 ‘I’라는 표현을 잘 사용하지 않습니다.
대신 아래와 같은 표현을 사용하는 것이 보다 세련된(sophisticated) 문장입니다.
“This work developed the model of human behavior in a task, domain, or system”
혹은,
“This study examined the problem of finding necessary and sufficient conditions for the singular differential equation”
이 외에도 ‘the present study’, ‘the present work’, ‘the current study’ 등으로 인칭대명사 ‘I’를 대신해서 쓸 수 있습니다.
또한, ‘the author’라는 표현도 흔하게 사용되고 있습니다.
예를 들면, ‘The author developed the model of human behavior in a task, domain, or system”
만약 논문의 저자가 2명 이상이라면, 아래와 같이 author의 복수형인 authors를 사용하면 됩니다.
‘The authors developed the model of human behavior in a task, domain, or system”
물론 경우에 따라서는 ‘I’를 사용하는 논문도 볼 수 있습니다. 그런데 이러한 경우는 논문의 저자가 그 분야의 대가이거나, 혹은 자신의 이론을 반박하는 다른 연구자와 치열한 논쟁을 벌이는 argumentative paper 성격의 논문에서 볼 수도 있습니다.
